My family and I decided to explore some of Newberry National Volcanic Monument and started off with visiting Paulina Peak. The winding road to the peak was quite the adventure. We were able to make it up to the top in our Honda Accord and were lucky enough to be the only ones there. It feels wild that this peak is accessible by car since it's almost 8000', there is also a trail that goes to the top if driving isn't an option.
We parked and explored the observation site/peak. We scrambled up the rock mound that appeared to be the high point. There was a sign with the elevation and great views just from the parking area. My sister and I followed a small foot trail from the northeast edge of the parking area which took us to full views of the two lakes below - Paulina and East.
We were at the peak during mid to late afternoon in early October so it was a pleasant temperature and there was some wind but nothing too bad. The views weren't super clear due to wildfire smoke obscuring the horizon so we couldn't see mountains in any directions. We were able to see the lake basin below which was worth it just for that.
