Lake Name: Olallie Lake

Lake Coordinates: 44.8062, -121.7858

Lake Elevation: 4900'

Access: Drive up

Permits/Fees: Campgrounds have fees. Day use appears to not have fees.

Note: The lake is huge, and FS 4220 goes alongside it, so there are many places to access for day use. NO SWIMMING is allowed in the lake. The Forest Service page mentions Head Lake nearby is swimmable.

Fire Damage:Moderate to Extensive. There are certain patches that are not burned, while other sections burned hot. On the west side of FS 4220 in particular, it appears the fire burned very hot; some sections barely even have ground foliage, while the resort and some campground areas still have green trees.

Location: Near FS 4420 in Olallie Lake Scenic Area in Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon, U.S.A.

Administration: Mount Hood National Forest

Ranger District: Clackamas River Ranger District

Date Accessed: August 20, 2024

Olallie Lake is the largest lake within Olallie Lake Scenic Area. There is Olallie Resort, which is privately run and rents cabins and yurts. There are multiple campgrounds along the lake as well. Olallie Butte rises above the lake to the east. The resort is on the north end of the lake, and FS 4220 continues along the west shore of the lake.

According to the Forest Service website, no motorized boats are allowed in the lake and swimming is not permitted. Fishing and non-motorized boating are the recreation options for this lake.

View of Mt Jefferson from north side of lake

On the north side, Mt. Jefferson is visible to the south. We stopped at Camp Ten Campground to go down to the edge of the lake and take pictures. The water was very clear. There were huckleberries all around.

According to Wikipedia (which basically means take this with a grain of salt), "The name Olallie is Chinook Jargon for berry."
