Big Indian Overlook is on the south side of the Steens Mountain Loop Rd and right before the third gate, which was closed as of 5/23/26 (it doesn’t tend to open until sometime in June most years). There’s a short trail to an overlook, but there are views all along the trail. We found some places along it we liked for taking photos of the gorge and didn’t do the whole length this time around. It’s barely 0.1 miles in length. The one advantage to this overlook compared to Viewpoint 42.66966, -118.69391 is that more of the headwall is visible which is cool to see at the end of the gorge.

I backpacked this gorge in 2011 and it’s still one of my most memorable backpacking trips. I love that the view of the gorge is visible from the road making it more accessible to those who can’t backpack or hike.
